The microporous film, an essential part of the microporous fabric, is a light non-woven laminated film that offers great breathability while remaining impervious to liquid. To avoid blood and liquid penetration, the size of the microporous is much smaller than water drops, as shown in Figure 2.
Since the microporous film is a crucial material used in medical protective clothing, it has numerous features that make it so essential, which including:
- Anti-blood penetration and anti-liquid
- Great abrasion resistance

The polypropylene(PP) fabric refers to the textile product that is derived from the thermoplastic polymer. It is also called PP non-woven, which is often combined with microporous film to build stronger protection, as we have illustrated in Figure 2.
The followings are significant features that make PP fabric a fundamental material in medical protective coveralls:
- Water resistance
- Low cost
- Air permeability
- Flexible in making different sizes and shapes
SMS, commonly known as Spun-bond Melt-blown Spun-bond, is a three-laminate non-woven fabric. It consists of the following three layers, as shown in Figure 3:
- a bottom layer of spun-bond polypropylene
- a middle layer of melt-blown polypropylene
- a top layer of spun-bond polypropylene
The melt-blown non-woven fabric is softer than the spun-bond polypropylene, while the spun-bond polypropylene is of excellent durability. SMS, which combines these two main materials, will create strong protection against fluids and particles.

As an essential material used in medical protective clothing, SMS has the following features:
- Soft and breathable
- Tough and durable
All in all, these three main materials used in medical protective clothing have their advantages. When comparing these main materials, it is easy for us to find some differences between them.
For instance, PP fabric, a non-woven material, is cheaper than microporous film and SMS. It also has low moisture absorption than SMS and microporous film. In addition, SMS, which contains three layers, is the top protector against fluids compared with PP fabric and SMS. Thus, the combination of these three fabrics will create strong prevention for medical staff.
Basic Standards of Medical Protective Clothing
It is acknowledged that different countries and regions own disparate standards of medical protective clothing. Here are the most typical standards used in some major countries.
- CE Certification
Generally speaking, EN 14126:2003 is the European standard for medical protective clothing. The standard specifies a set of requirements and test methods to measure the fabric protection against infective agents. EN 14126:2003 includes the following 5 test methods to determine the protection class against several specific biological hazards. The higher the protection class, the higher the protection level. - American Standard
In the United States, they adopt ANSI/AAMI PB70 as the standard for each medical protective clothing. The standard establishes a classification system for protective apparel used in healthcare facilities, based on their liquid barrier performance. Also, it includes four standard tests to evaluate the barrier effectiveness of the medical protective clothing. Level 1 is the lowest level of protection, while level 4 owns the highest protection.

- Chinese Standard
Basically, China keeps strictly accordance with GB 19082-2009 for disposable protective coveralls production. The standard specifies four levels according to the protection level, while
the higher the grade, the higher the protection level. In addition, the standard sets the following requirements for each medical protective clothing:
- Moisture permeability should not be less than 2500g / (M2 · d)
- Hydrostatic Pressure: no less than 1.67 kPa (17cm H2O)
- The filtration efficiency of non-oily particles should not be less than 70%
- Resistance to penetration by synthetic blood follows the standard of EN 14126:2003
